Going back to a page you have viewed previously

When you are using Internet Explorer you'll find that you'll click on link after link, and may well eventually forget where you've been. Internet Explorer keeps track of the route you've taken, however, so it's really easy to go back to a page you visited a few clicks ago.

Have a look at the top-left of the Internet Explorer window. There are two round blue buttons which look like this:

The back and forward buttons
The back and forward buttons

Click the one on the left to go back to the webpage you were previously visiting in Internet Explorer. Simple as that!

"Favourites"

Saving the location of a "Favourite" website

As you use the web more and more you'll find that there are a number of websites that you visit quite frequently, or that contain useful information. So that you don't have to remember (and type in!) the full address for these websites, it's possible to save them as "Favourites", so that they are always only a couple of clicks away:

  1. Go to the webpage you want to add as a favourite
  2. Click on the "Favorites" menu at the top of the screen
  3. In the Favorites menu, click on "Add to Favorites..."
  4. A new window opens; in this window, just click the "Add" button.

Opening a "favourite"

Once you've added a website to you list of favourites, you'll need to know how to open it again:

  1. Click on the "Favorites" menu at the top of the screen
  2. Your list of favourite websites will now be displayed: just scroll down to the one you want, and click on it
  3. Often, the list of favourites will be so big that it can't fit on the screen. If this happens, a tiny black triangle will appear at the bottom of the list of favourites; move the mouse over this triangle to scroll down through the list until you find the favourite you want.

Searching within a page

Often a website contains a lot of text, and it is difficult to look through all of it find the bit you want. However, it is possible to search the text on a website:

  1. Click the "Edit" Menu, and then "Find (on this page)" (alternatively you can use the shortcut key Ctrl+F);
  2. A new window opens. Type the words you want to search for into the text box in this new window;
  3. Click "Find Next": this will take you to the next point on the website which contains the words you have searched for: you can keep clicking "Find Next" until you get to the right bit of the website.
