Cut, copy and paste/quick

From UCanWiki

Cut, copy and paste are techniques which allow you to move information, such as pictures and text, from one area of your computer to another. For example, you could copy a picture from a website and paste it into an email, or copy an address from an email and paste it into a letter you are writing in OpenOffice Writer.

Copy and pasting text

  1. Highlight the text you want to copy.
  2. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard (often marked "Ctrl"), tap the "C" key, and then release the Control key.
  3. Go to the program you want to paste the text into, and make sure the cursor is at the point where you want the text to appear.
  4. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard, tap the "V" key, and then release the Control key. The text you copied should now appear.

Copy and pasting images

  1. Right-click on the image you want to copy.
  2. A menu will open; in this menu, click "Copy" or "Copy Image".
    1. Note; some programs, such as Picasa do not allow you to copy this way. If the "Copy" option doesn't appear when you right-click on an image, try left-clicking on the image, and then clicking on "Copy" under the "Edit" menu at the top of the window.
  3. Go to the program you want to paste the image into, and make sure the cursor is at the point where you want the image to appear.
  4. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard, tap the "V" key, and then release the Control key. The image you copied should now appear.

The difference between Cut and Copy

On one level, the "cut" and "copy" commands do the same thing: they both allow you to move information from one program to another. The only difference is, if you "cut" information, it will disappear from its original location. You can use the cut command in exactly the same way as you use the copy command; just hit Control and X rather than Control and C.

Note that you can't cut text or images from a website; this is because the website is produced by someone else, and you can't change it. Use copy instead.
